The work to develop a major reconfiguration of the Berenson-Eggers Type of Service (BETOS) classification addressed problems that had developed over 30 years in the original BETOS developed in the late 1980s by the Urban Institute for CMS. The revised BETOS classification, labeled BETOS 2.0, categorizes more than 9000 service codes used in the Medicare physician fee schedule (MPFS) into clinically coherent, service categories representing different types of services. The file permits users to analyze service volume and spending for fee schedules that use standard CPT/HCPCS coding, using the restructured BETOS classification. The file represents services codes current in 2019 for the MPFS.
