These data were originally collected in August of each year, with an additional collection in February 2020, just before federal student loan payments were paused. For data on collections debt and subprime credit, the sample includes borrowers who held student debt in February 2020 and were not over age 70 at that point. These data are also restricted to borrowers who had a credit record in every year from 2017 to 2022. For data on past forbearance default rates, the sample includes borrowers who held student debt in August 2017, just ahead of the administrative forbearances resulting from Hurricanes Irma and Maria and the California wildfires. Zip code–level characteristics in the data (median household income and predominant race) are sourced from the National Historical Geographic Information System and linked to individuals' home zip codes in the credit bureau data. These zip code characteristics are 2015–19 five-year estimates.
