This dataset provides national statistics on student loan and auto loan debt for August 2019 through August 2026 and national and state-level statistics for August 2026 on people who hold both student loan debt and an auto loan or lease. Measures include the share of people with a credit record who have student debt or auto loan debt; average balances and reported monthly payment amounts; the share with both types of debt; estimated numbers of adults with both types of debt; and average student, auto, and combined debt among people holding both. Statistics are derived from the Urban Institute Credit Panel, a nationally representative panel of deidentified consumer-level records from a major credit bureau. Estimates for 2019 and 2020 use a 2 percent panel (about 5 million consumers); estimates for 2021 through 2026 use a 4 percent panel (more than 10 million consumers). See the technical appendix for definitions and interpretation notes.

Estimates are derived from nationally representative panels of consumer credit records. Percentage measures refer to people with a credit record. Estimated population counts are back-of-the-envelope calculations based on the adult population and an assumption that 97.3 percent of adults have a credit record. The student-loan monthly payment measure reflects the amount owed on open accounts rather than observed cash payments; estimates during and around the federal student-loan payment pause should therefore be interpreted with caution
