Data set provides information on a number of fields derived from Form 990 data not available through other sources. However, data set may exclude some organizations filing within the given years. For aggregate analyses, NCCS recommends using the NCCS Core Files or IRS Business Master Files.

Usage Limitations

Contains information for tax exempt organizations filing a Form 990 or 990-EZ between FY 1998 to FY 2003. Note that this will exclude organizations falling below the minimum filing threshold for the Form 990-EZ (<$50,000 in gross receipts from 2010 to present, <25,000 in prior years) as well as organizations not required to register with the IRS (organizations with <$5,000 in gross receipts, and religious congregation). Note that the mode of data collection appears to exclude a number of potential organizations, and therefore should not be taken as indicative of the entire population of nonprofit organizaitons in the given years. In FY 1998, the year when the IRS began scanning Form 990s, a number of organizations were probably missed. The number of organizations in 2001 and 2002 is virtually identical, an oddity that appears to be attributable to data processing, not to any reality within the nonprofit sector. Consequently, this data set is not intended for aggregate analysis, but should be considered for panel or other types of analyses. Furthermore,
